Successfully Prevented Catalyst Poisoning and Improved Robustness of Artificial Olfactory Sensors Using Weak Van der Waals Forces Between Hydrophobic Molecular Scaffolds and Hydrophilic Solid Surfaces
Nov 1, 2024
Professor Takeshi Yanagida and Associate Professor Yuta Tsuji (Faculty of Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering) achieved both robustness and sensing sensitivity in artificial olfactory sensors. They proposed a new sensor operating principle that intentionally utilizes Van der Waals forces between hydrophobic molecular scaffolds and hydrophilic solid surfaces, which were previously considered to have a small contribution.
This achievement is expected to contribute to "odor data science" and its industrial development. It is anticipated that long-term measurement of odor information will become possible.
